Do You Want a Safer Lab? Veer Away from These Costly Mistakes

Safety has always been an issue when it comes to running or maintaining labs. Unfortunately, not all lab operators are taking the proper steps.

Take note: Certain mistakes, as simple as they may seem, can actually have a huge impact on your finances. Accordingly, they may even play a role on how safe your lab will be.

So, what mistakes should we avoid when managing labs? And how do we prevent them?

Let’s discuss:

Mistake #1: Not Regularly Assessing Your Lab

Assessing your lab is vital as it can help you find which particular aspects will need to be fine tuned.

Think about it: How will you know if your laminar air flow hood (or any other lab equipment for that matter) is working properly if you don’t undertake the proper assessment? With that in mind, you should make it a point to regularly inspect your work environment, and make sure that everything’s working properly. This will minimize untoward issues—and you get to ensure your lab’s safety as well.

Mistake #2: Not Setting Up Safety Rules

Let’s face it: Working in a lab means you will be exposed to certain dangers (flammable chemicals, toxins, etc). Accordingly, you need to have a clear set of parameters for workers to follow, as this can help ensure that the proper procedures are taken and risks are put to a minimum.

Tip: After setting up your safety rules, make sure to implement them properly. Don’t commit the mistake of setting rules without following them, as this will not solve the problem at all. If someone violates the rules, make sure that the proper measures are applied. This will help ensure that everything is followed to the letter.

Mistake #3: Not Investing In Quality Equipment

Yes—earning money isn’t that easy nowadays. However, you shouldn’t make that a reason to invest in low quality lab equipment or furniture. After all, it’s your safety which is at stake here.

Make sure to use only high quality equipment—whether it may be a flow bench, microscope or any other important tools. Remember that safety is a primary consideration that you should never underestimate. As it is, you should only opt for tools, equipment and furniture that have the needed features and attributes. Invest in safety. You’ll thank yourself for that.
