I can’t reply to the ArmCopter Dev Group Discussions, but I wanted to add to the thoughts. I think that your hardware is far more advanced than where ArduPilot is at.
I am a COMPLETE novice, so simple is good. I do want to go far beyond that though. Maintaining the link for the simple is like training wheels. Everyone should strive to eventually take them to truly maneuver and advance.
Just a novice’s thoughts.

Simple... that's maybe the problem we have..
because the ATMEGA CPU is very easy (simple) to program. The CPU supports only a small sets of functionality.
Going to a modern Cortex Processor a lot of new technology is in it, but the complexity of code is growing.
So at the end we have to leave the 'simple' way, but we can go a way that the code is still something that is 'simple' to read and manage.
