CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. -- We still don't have hoverboards or flying cars, but in the glorious future we live in today, we do have flying robots that can bring us beer. Unfortunately for those in the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration won't yet allow drones for commercial use. That means that while it's OK to fly beers around to your buddies in your spare time, no paid or promotional delivery services are allowed just yet.

beerdrone.pngBeer drones ride again!Eric Mack/CNET

But that hasn't stopped brew titan Anheuser-Busch InBev from looking into how drones might be able to help keep the party going in the near future. The company brought some experimental prototypes to Whatever, USA -- a fictional town that Bud Light created in Colorado last weekend for the purposes of throwing a party for 1,000 contest winners and creating all kind of new promotional content -- where I got an in-person demonstration.

I spoke with Federico Treu and Roberto Navoni of an outfit based in California and Italy called XTrace about the Bud Light delivery system that they worked up for "Whatever." Essentially, it's a custom-built quadcopter that's a slave to a beacon that also functions as a very simple remote control. Push one button, and the drone comes to you; a different button and it returns to where it started. Push a third button and the drone will follow you at a safe distance.

The small, lightweight drone can only carry one bottle of beer at a time, but it's still an important proof of concept for lazy beer drinkers everywhere. The drone can easily function as a push-button bartender or a beer-caddy, following you down the street with refreshment just hovering a few feet away, just in case you need a drink (the fourth and last button on the remote tells the drone to land where it is).

"When we started this project, the idea was that, it's really difficult to fly drones," Treu told me outside the Crested Butte "Whatever" Visitors' Center. "But drones nowadays are smart enough to follow you, so even people that have never tried can fly a drone -- just hold the beacon, press the button and go."

For drone nerds, there are also some interesting things going on behind the scenes of what seems like a simple remote-controlled drone setup. For the prototypes in use at "Whatever," Navoni is in charge of safety. He walks around wearing Google Glass running a custom-made Glass app that provides him with a view of what the drone is seeing, as well as all the relevant statuses for the drones current operation.

In other words, while it may seem almost like a simple toy, Navoni is able to monitor everything that's happening with the drone through Glass and take over control of the drone if need be.

Treu says the next challenge for their drones is to automate obstacle avoidance. He says the drone in use at "Whatever" only has a carrying capacity of about 1 pound, but other form factors could easily handle bigger loads.

The drones came to "Whatever, USA" as part of a partnership through the "beer garage," a sort of skunkworks lab run out of San Francisco that looks at use digital tools and other innovations to promote brands like Bud Light.

Check out a delivery in action in the video below. The entire sequence was done by pressing only two buttons on the beacon.

Dear friends,

after hard work on firmware doing by Arducopter and Virtualrobotix Dev Team , we are happy to present the result of this incredible test ... this is only first test VRBrain vs DJI Wookong .

The firmware is ARducopter32 rev 3.0.3 , this revision of firmware use AP_HAL library to interface the Arducopter application . The firmware is mantain by Arducopter devteam , the last improvment doing by Leonard that solve some glitch in loiter , and gps override mode.

The result of work doing by Randy and the other member of the team is incredible , we fly the quad in gps mode and it fly as robot ... as Dji Wookong .

This is a video doing during VR Lab test of new VR Lifter frame.

But if you like fly in stabilize mode you can enjoy you a lot. :) I prefer a lot fly my quad in stabilize and acro mode it's nice.

The power of VRBrain with its  STM32F4 microcontroller  have 164 mhz of clock with internal dsp have a more  power of DJI Wookong cpu that use SAM3X micro processor at only 96 mhz and don't have dsp processor for hardware math processing.

Now the new revision of VRBrain 4.5 can support also an external IMU so we can solve the vibration problem with mechanical patch.

70900157?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

Whe have a great new wiki page for support the user :

https://vrbrain.wordpress.com/

A new tools for update the firmware is available and will be release in the next days , so you can choose your code download local and program the board without problem.

We are very happy of VRBrain performances :)

p.s.

Thanks to Marco Robustini for his great video :)

This is the final configuration of VR Tiger Shark X8  RTF  :

VR Brain is the Autopilot board used in Tiger Shark.

VR Gimbal is the Brishless gimbal controller used in Easy Shot Gimbal .

Between Tiger Shark and Easy shot we put a special anti vibration system that cut vibration from drone frame to gimbal. After a lot of work for setup it work very well :)

The frame configuration is X8 coaxial configuration we choose to use this configuration because is possible continue to fly also without two propeller if the payload is not so heavy .

The Payload for camera is near 1 kg . With a 10 Amp 4S battery we are near 15 min of fight.

This is a last fly test doing by Emile with Tiger Shark and Easy Shot Gimbal.

The fly test is doing with last revision of APM Copter available on our repository :

http://vrgimbal.wordpress.com/download/vrgimbal-1-13-2/

The Fly of drone is very smoth and automatic functionality as loiter are solid as rock.

After the latest firmware release, vrb supports RtOS for operation.

A neat feature is the advanced and quasi-unlimited logging capabilities. The logs will be written after each flight session and they are stored on SdCard.

on Vrb 5.0 the microsd adapter is on board, but for owners (like me) of the previous hw revision, we need to work creatively.

the standard SD-CARDs is accesible via SPI bus, and the mandatory connections are : MISO(master-in-slave-out) / MOSI (master-out-slave-in) / SCK (clock) / SS (signal-select) / GND and VCC+.

all of them is available on JP27  connector (the white one near the INPUT rails). This one, has 8 pin connections, we need (as stated before) only six of them.

We can figure out which ones by looking at image below.

pin-1 is the one which is more close to MCU (the big chip on the center of the board); pin-8 is the one near the input rails.

12232301071?profile=original

I could buy a specific adapter for sd card, but I decided to be creative and I invented this system, which at the moment seems to work very well.

12232301255?profile=original

Basically I used a simple adapter sdcard-> microsd and I soldered directly to the exposed pad on the back as shown.

12232301084?profile=original

all the connections are straight point-to-point. watch out for "exp_EN" which connects to SS on sd card adapter. i've ordered pre-crimped cables and the female terminal directly at VirtualRobotix.

You can check if everything works correctly by connecting the VRB with sd-card inserted in Mission planner and connect with Terminal. Once connected, enter in "TEST" and then in "SHELL".

Check for a folder called "APM" into fs/microsd path.

No more configuration is necessary.

Now the system will log all the flight data on different files on sd, and you can retrive them by simply unplugging the card from the copter and reading it with a computer.

UPDATE :

NOT all microSD is +5v tolerant on vcc. so i've tested a solution using a 78l33 linear regulator soldered directly on pads.

12232301097?profile=original

the "VCC_5V" connection goes in the In pin of the 78l33 (pin3), gnd on sdcard pad 3 and the output of the 78l33 goes to pad 4.

The mod works flawlessly.

check datasheet of 78l33 for pinout numbering.

This is last Update on VRGimbal project , in first video you can see a big Handy Gimbal configuration from our customer
- In the video you can see the Pitch , Roll and yaw smooth compensation .
- Control by Joystick.
- Follow frame on YAW.
In second video there is an another great example of test doing by Robert on his Hely class 600 controlled by VR Gimbal:
comment by Robert :
Here's a quite test video from last weekend.  The results are not perfect, but there was a fair breeze blowing (about 20-30 km/h) and it was in Loiter which we all know can be quite busy. You can actually see the landing gear in the frame towards the end of the video which gives you some indication of just what the gimbal had to deal with.  Overall, I think this is pretty decent so far.  Main goal now is to work on better stability of the helicopter and reducing Loiter "busy-ness".
Now start to work on Mavlink integration , the board work fine on small gopro 2 axis configuration but also on big Gimbal configuration as in the video.
Before to end of this month will be also available the control gui on Android Pad.
here are available more techincal detail : http://vrgimbal.wordpress.com/

Drones and aerial work in Italy. Despite some difficulties of a regulatory and bureaucratic, dictated by the regulation on unmanned aircraft, now almost every day ENAC recognizes operators and means to do the non-critical and authorizes (in number sharply less) to mixed critical operations.

Currently there are 232 operators SAPR. Of these, those who use drones Italian counted on the fingers of one hand. In fact, the means that are all the greater in non-critical actions are based on systems of DJI (70% of the total), suitably modified to be recognized, of which 20% are constituted by DJI Phantom.

VIRTUALROBOTIX 350 SPARK THE DRONE ITALIAN FOR AERIAL WORK

In this scenario stands recognition ENAC achieved today by 'very Italian VirtualRobotix that for the first time enters the Olympus of Drones that  can perform aerial work It is quadcopter SPARK 350. It is a true Italian product made in almost all components from VirtualRobotix. Only motors and controllers (ESC) are not made "in house". Not for long, however, the reality of Bergamo is also planning the ESC.
Spark_fe.jpg
Even the design is Italian, the body is designed by Flavio Taborelli, printed in SLS, made with a mix of ABS and composite materials to have a proper balance between flexibility and rigidity.
vrbrain.bmp
Inside the autopilot is called VrBrain 5.2: a flight control 32bit made in VirtualRobotix whose hardware and sensors have also been taken as an example by the Pixhawk3DRobotics who had initially chosen another type of accelerometers and gyroscopes getting bad results forced to run for cover immediately after choosing the same path of VRBrain. And the GPS? He also designed by VirtualRobotix, updates the previous VR GPS module which now uses the NEO 8
Spark_board_interna.jpg

NO INTERNAL WIRING
The Italian news are not finished, the SPARK has no wiring. Inside the frame using a particular card that serves as integrated modular distribution board and connects esc and motors. The standard version also mounts an OSD with tx and video room integrated fpv navigation and you can switch between the cam navigation and video preview of the room installed on the gimbal
FIRMWARE FLIGHT ARDUCOPTER
VirtualRobotix, in the person of Roberto Navoni, was the founder and contributor of codeArducopter now called APM: Copter. The version of firmware that runs on VRBrain is properly optimized for the hardware VRBRain but has the exact same functions of the official version. For these reasons we can say that the firmware is made in VirtualRobotix even if the project is actually open source.
TERMINATOR AND PARACHUTE
The SPARK recognized by 'ENAC weighs 1.8 Kg and has terminator flight andparachute. It can be considered the Italian answer to DJI Phantom , a 'statement that from now on it is also valid for the professional field.

Dear Friends,

after a lot of work on Electronic and Frame we are happy to present first flight test of VRCopter complete of VR 2 Axis Gimbal .

In this fly we test this Copter configuration :

  • VR Copter Frame .
  • VR oring anti vibration system.
  • VR Copter Landing Gear
  • VR Gimbal Frame and Electronic for GoPro Hero 3.
  • GoPro 3 Hero Silver
  • VR Brain 4.5
  • 4 MK3639 motor
  • 4 ESC with SimonK Firmware
  • 3DR GPS
  • 3DR Telemetry KIT
  • 4 APC 12 Propeller.
  • 10 Amp 3S battery flight time around 20 min without payload until 24 min.

In this test flight I checked the behavior of the drone in different situations both at high altitude I flew about 50 m high and low altitude.
The video that is present in raw format created with the GOPRO 3 silver model you do not notice the presence of high-frequency vibrations, which were removed by introducing a special anti vibrating plate inserted between the frame of the drone and the gimbal . There are only some low-frequency vibrations due to the influence of the wind at high altitude on the mechanics of the gopro gimbal frame we're still working to improve it further.
Overall, we think that this platform can be an interesting alternative to cars like the Phantom of the DJI is that in the previous version thanks to a range of great flight almost 20 minutes.

This drone configuration will be available in DIY KIT before the end of year in the next week will be available more info about it

To our knowledge the first Italian "drone" for professional use in the range below 25 Kg. In obtaining the type certificate of the DGAC, the SPARK of developed by Italian VitualRobotix arrives in France after having been recently recognized in Italy to carry out aerial work. (See also: SPARK, the drone Italian ENAC recognized for non-critical actions)
Based on autopilot VR Brain PRO 5.2 is running on a customized version of Arducopter 32-bit, the SPARK today in France can carry out aerial photography, surveying and aerial work in general, in the scenarios S2 and S3 using as ground control also the VR PAD Station and the mission planner (see also: The no flight zone on the VR Station PAD)
The scenario S2 is to work up to 1000 meters away from the pilot even in EVLOS and a height of less than 50 meters but no people in the area of operations
L 'S3 is related to visual flight in urban scenarios and / or in close proximity to people and animals but with a maximum distance from the pilot di100m

virtualrobotix francia

Congratulations to VirtualRobotix facing in a market which now sees 1,622 active Operators , 2849 registered drone and  1764 allowed to operate in urban areas (means of mass less than 2 kg or up to 4 kg if equipped with a parachute) with no accidents from 2012, date on which the Regulation entered into force on French Drone Market.

This is a pre-beta testing firmware.

It is suggested that you test it only if you know what you are doing and are able to take the risks on a breifly tested firmware.

This is a cloned version of the Arducopter 3.0 release. It is 1:1 with it’s original firmware. So please refer to the Arducopter site and Diydrones forum  for more information on the software new functionalities:

  • Inertial Navigation for Loiter and Auto meaning much more accurate control
  • 3D navigation controller follows straight lines in all dimensions between waypoints
  • WPNAV_SPEED, WPNAV_SPEED_UP, WPNAV_SPEED_DN, WPNAV_ACCEL allows configuring speeds and acceleration during missions
  • “compassmot” to compensate for interference on compass from the pdb, motors, ESCs and battery
  • pre-arm checks to ensure all calibration has been performed before arming (can be disabled by setting ARMING_CHECK to zero)
  • GPS failsafe – switches to LAND if GPS is lost for 5 seconds
  • stability patch improvements to stop rapid climbs in very overpowered or overtuned copters
  • Circle mode improvements including “panorama” when CIRCLE_RADIUS set to zero

These are the release notes specific for VRBRAIN. Please read carefully:

  • The External GPS port and the Telemetry port have been swapped. So please invert the two ports to have both working again.
  • This firmware is only for standard PPM radios. Previous problems with Futaba and FRsky should have been resolved, please report any problems.
  • You will loose all previous settings, so please backup your parameters if you need to go back to 2.9.1.2
  • You need to make all pre-flight calibration routines otherwise copter will not arm. So proceed with:
    • Radio calibration through Mission Planner
    • Accel calibration via Terminal (at the moment via mission planner is not working)
    • Compass calibration via Mission Planner
  • Make extensive pre-flight checks before fliying

At the moment only QUAD and HEXA frames will be released, so please for any questions or suggestion refer to e.castelnuovo [AT] virtualrobotix.com

RC Radio compatibility list

All previous radio problems SHOULD be resolved, but as we don’t have all you should report any issues.

Before using RC radio verify in Mission Planner planner if there is any latency > 1 second or bad Jittering.

If there is don’t fly!

In the preflight check , control the radio rensponse also with already tested radio.

In last months virtualrobotix lab work hard on a "secret alter ego project" our target was add low cost companion computer and add advanced functionality to our Flight Conrol .

During last fair in Milan spoke with Michele about the problem of analogic trasmission during the FPV Racing because the indoor situation create a lot of rf iusse . During our development work a lot on low latency and redundace system. So that was a good application where understand if our work was good or not for control the drone in fpv mode and with digital control channel.

Actually we are not already update vr pad station with last update but we are work in progress so decide to do a test with PC connected to the drone.

In this demo we use

a VR uBrain : http://www.virtualrobotix.it/index.php/en/shop/autopilot/vrbrainmicro51-detail

a VR GPS : http://www.virtualrobotix.it/index.php/en/shop/accessories/gps-ublox-8-detail

as companion computer i use a :

Raspberry PI 2 with a prototype of custom HDMI digital input , a standard RPI camera or usb h264 cam.

A Wifi AC dongle.

The micro brain is connected to companion computer by usb port and we developed a custom application that transport mavlink protocol and support a custom API functionality , but is possible to use mavproxy or drone kit ,too. I prefer c/c++ or java app not python.

By our api is possible to activate by ground station video and remote control on mavlink for control the drone with very low latency so is possible to control the drone in stable mode.

During the test we are incredible surprised we don't have any artifact and don't lost the video link ... we did some test on outdoor until 400 m without big problem. :)

This is only the begin of the project for update your "old" vrbrain technology with new advanced digital functionality to your drone :)

In our api is already implemented the API for control sony camera and GO Pro 3/4 cam with preview trasmission to ground station :)

If you need more info about our tecnology contact me at r.navoni@virtualrobotix.com we have a secret group in fb of developer that are join at early version of our development :)
